What is Cataract ?

A Cataract is a clouding of the normally clear and transparent lens of the eye. It can be compared to a window that is frosted or yellowed.

The common symptoms of Cataract include:

  • A painless blurring of vision.
  • Glare of light sensitivity.
  • Poor night vision.
  • Double eye vision in one eye.
  • Needing brighter light to read.
  • Fading or yellowing of colours.

What Causes Cataract?

The most common type of Cataract is related to aging of the eye.

What happens in Cataract?

In a normal eye, light focuses precisely
on the retina.
In an eye with a Cataract, light scatters throughout the eye instead of focusing precisely on the retina.

How is Cataract treated ?

Surgery is the only way a cataract can be removed. Surgery consists of removal of Cataract & Replacement with an artificial lens (IOL – Intra Ocular Lens of an appropriate power)

Differences between Conventional and Phaco Surgery

Conventional Large Incision
Very Small Phaco Incision

Foldable Intraocular Lens

A foldable intraocular lens can be folded to half its size. This makes it possible to insert the lens into the eye through the small phaco incision.

Once a foldable lens has been placed in the capsular bag, it folds into its normal size.

Modern Cataract Surgery

  • Cataract Surgery is performed under topical anesthesia i.e. few drops of anesthesia – NO INJECTIONS.
  • The preferred surgical technique used is Phaco Emulsification (Cold Phaco) with foldable IOL (Lens) implantation.
  • We use Sovereign Whitestar Classic – Phaco Machine from AMO, USA for cold Phaco in all cases.
  • Cataract Surgery lasts for only 15 – 20 minutes. IOL: Depending on your choice, we use all types of IOLS. Non foldable to foldable and the latest Presbyopia correcting IOLS (Restor Acrysof Multifocal from Alcon, USA. Tecnis Multifocal & Resume Multifocal from AMO, USA) reducing the spectacle dependence after the operation.
  • Drapes, knives used by us are disposable and imported from USA/Japan.
  • Viscoelastic material used is eighter Indian or Imported depending on your choice.
